In a devastating incident at Brown University, two promising students were killed when a gunman opened fire in a classroom, just as the semester neared its end. MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old aspiring neurosurgeon from Virginia, and 19-year-old Ella Cook, a student leader from Alabama, are mourned by their peers and family.
The attack, which injured nine other students, occurred during a study session for an economics final. As questions arise regarding the gunman’s motives and his ability to flee the scene, the university community is grappling with profound grief.
Umurzokov had faced numerous hardships, including a childhood surgery for a neurological condition. His sister describes him as a dedicated and kind-hearted individual who often helped others, especially new immigrants adjusting to life in the U.S.
Cook was known as a vibrant leader at Brown and was described by church members as a bright light spreading positivity and encouragement around her. Both victims left an indelible mark on their communities.
As investigations continue, those injured in the shooting are receiving medical care, with one remaining in critical condition. The university's president expressed the urgency for a discussion on campus safety in light of this tragic event.
