WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump was awarded the new FIFA peace prize on Friday at the 2026 World Cup draw — giving the soccer spectacle to set matchups for the quadrennial tournament even more of a Trumpian flair.

Trump, who has openly campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize, was heavily favored to win the newly created FIFA prize. He and FIFA president Gianni Infantino are close allies, with Infantino expressing that Trump deserved recognition for his efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza.

The certificate handed to Trump recognizes his actions to 'promote peace and unity around the world.' Infantino commented, This is what we want from a leader — a leader that cares about the people. Trump, draped in a gold medal and trophy featuring his name and the world held by hands, was presented with the award as Infantino articulated, this is your prize, this is your peace prize.

Trump expressed gratitude towards his family and recognized the leaders of the other two host nations — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum — during his speech.

This award from FIFA signifies a departure from the organization’s traditional focus on sport, as the governing body intends to honor global leaders who have contributed significantly towards peace.

The prize arrives amidst scrutiny regarding Trump's administration, which is facing backlash over lethal strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean. Tensions have escalated as Trump has also intensified his rhetoric against immigrants.

In an interesting turn, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who received the Nobel Peace Prize this year, later dedicated part of her award to Trump for 'his decisive support of our cause.'
