Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, has conveyed in his will his intention to be buried at the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. This ancient basilica, where six other popes rest, holds deep significance for Francis as it is a site he frequented throughout his papacy, visiting both at the start and conclusion of his apostolic trips.
In his will, dated June 29, 2022, Pope Francis designated that his final resting place should be in a simple, undecorated grave inscribed only with the name “Franciscus.” He expressed a desire for his "last earthly journey" to conclude at this venerable Marian shrine, emphasizing the personal connection he felt towards the Virgin Mary, whom he thanked in his last written words for her "docile and maternal care."
He specified that the tomb should be situated in the aisle next to the Pauline Chapel, close to the cherished Marian icon known as Salus Populi Romani, attributed to St. Luke the Evangelist. This icon has long been a symbol of devotion for Jesuits, and Francis, continuing this tradition, held it dear throughout his life and ministry.
In light of his humble wishes, the Vatican has honored his requests, which reflect the pope’s enduring emphasis on simplicity and profound faith during his 12-year papacy, leading countless followers by example.
