Six Palestinians tragically died and several more were injured on Saturday near a humanitarian aid distribution center in southern Gaza, according to reports from the Hamas-run Civil Defence agency. The incident occurred as individuals gathered to collect food supplies when the shooting began. Eyewitnesses claimed the Israeli forces initiated the gunfire when people attempted to approach the site. The Israeli military, however, stated they had only fired warning shots at individuals they perceived as threats.
Over the past week, the aid center has seen rising tensions and chaos, with numerous Palestinians killed and hundreds injured in their attempts to access basic necessities. The US and Israel-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which oversees the center, has temporarily suspended operations amidst concerns over overcrowding and safety.
Despite the ongoing unrest, crowds continue to form daily at a location adjacent to an Israeli military zone, which individuals must traverse to reach the aid site. In an official announcement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) insisted that they had informed residents that the area operates as an active combat zone during night hours.
The GHF reported that they could not distribute food on Saturday as they faced various threats from Hamas, a claim the group refuted. Such incidents are likely to provoke heightened international criticism towards Israel's controversial new distribution system. The United Nations has voiced strong concerns, asserting that it endangers Palestinians and fails to address the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Additionally, Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for Civil Defence, stated that Israeli airstrikes on a residential building in Gaza City earlier resulted in at least 15 civilian casualties, with some individuals reportedly trapped under debris. The IDF explained these strikes were intended to eliminate a leader from the Mujahideen Brigades, a group blamed for the deadly Hamas attacks on October 7, which resulted in significant loss of life.
In light of these ongoing events, the newly implemented aid system in Gaza, which bypasses the UN—a body Israel accuses of permitting Hamas to misappropriate supplies—faces scrutiny. Humanitarian groups have denounced the GHF's approach as impractical and unethical. As tensions continue to rise, this situation marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, which has already resulted in over 54,000 deaths in Gaza since the beginning of the war.
