A Northern Irish man, Alexander McCartney, has been given a 20-year prison sentence for his extensive online criminal activities involving child sexual abuse and blackmail. The 26-year-old was convicted of grooming and manipulating young girls while pretending to be a teenage girl himself. This exploitation resulted in a staggering count of 185 charges, including a guilty plea to manslaughter related to the death of a 12-year-old girl in the United States.

During a news conference on Friday, Catherine Kierans, acting head of the Serious Crime Unit of the Northern Ireland Public Prosecution Service, described the case as among the most horrific and distressing instances of child sexual abuse investigated. McCartney's predation began when he was still a teenager in his bedroom in Newry, where he exploited vulnerable girls using a facade of friendship, asking them for explicit images and engaging in sexual activity via devices.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland revealed that McCartney targeted around 3,500 victims across multiple countries, disseminating the obtained explicit content widely on the internet. Detective Chief Superintendent Eamonn Corrigan emphasized the profound impact of McCartney's manipulative actions on his young victims, underscoring the severe nature of this case and its ramifications.
