In a spectacular night for Asian musical theater, the Broadway rendition of Maybe Happy Ending, a cherished South Korean musical, celebrated a remarkable victory with six Tony Awards, highlighting its immense popularity. The production, which tells the heartwarming tale of friendship between two humanoid robots, was honored with awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score after being nominated for 10 categories at the ceremony held on Sunday.
Originally premiering in South Korea back in 2016, Maybe Happy Ending made its Broadway debut in 2024 to critical acclaim and audience adoration. This recognition not only enhances the musical's reputation but also cements South Korea’s status in the global entertainment industry, marking its achievement of EGOT status—the prestigious collection of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
The accolades included a Tony for Best Book of a Musical, presented to creators Hue Park and Will Aronson, while former Glee star Darren Criss, who stepped into the role of one of the robot characters, received the award for Best Lead Actor in a Musical—his first-ever Tony win—further underscoring the production's stellar quality and appeal.
