President Donald Trump has suspended the US green card lottery scheme in the wake of a mass shooting at Brown University last week in which two individuals lost their lives.
The suspect, 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente, entered the United States through the diversity lottery immigrant visa program (DV1) in 2017 and received a green card. He was discovered deceased in a New Hampshire storage facility, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the halting of the visa scheme to prevent further incidents, asserting that the program has risks that need to be addressed. In her comments on social media, she recalled previous efforts to end the program following violent incidents, including an attack in New York City.
Authorities suspect that Neves Valente also murdered MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, with both victims having had past associations at a university in Portugal.
The tragic Brown University shooting occurred during final exams, resulting in the deaths of students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, with numerous others injured.
